Every year, sixteen guys make their way to Hayward, Wisconsin for two rounds of golf, meals, cards, and the kind of banter that only happens when you’ve known each other long enough to finish each other’s stories – or correct them. This past weekend marked our 23rd annual outing. Twenty‑three years of fathers and sons, friends who feel like family, and a tradition that has quietly become one of the most meaningful weekends of the year for nearly everyone who shows up. What struck me this time wasn’t the golf – although the shots, both great and terrible, will be talked about for months. It wasn’t the weather, or the food, or even the laughs. It was the continuity. The commitment. The shared history. The way traditions anchor us in a world that moves too fast. There’s something powerful about returning to the same place with the same people year after year. You don’t have to manufacture connection – it’s already there. You just have to show up. And when you do, something amazing happens: Memories stack. Stories deepen. Relationships strengthen. Legacy grows. This weekend reminded me that traditions aren’t just events on a calendar. They’re investments – in each other, in belonging, in the moments that become the stories we tell for the rest of our lives. Your Call to Action: Think about one tradition in your life – big or small – that deserves protecting. And if you don’t have one, create one. Because the memories you make today become the legacy you carry forward. |
